During this lecture, Annemarie Vroed‑Landman, Nursing Staff Advisor within the department of Quality and Patient Care, guided us through the core of the nursing profession: essential care.

Essential care refers to the fundamental daily care activities that support a patient’s physical and psychosocial well‑being, autonomy and safety. It forms the foundation of nursing and caregiving, with the relationship of trust between patient and care provider playing an indispensable role.

The aim of this interactive session was to reflect on the importance of essential care and how to set priorities, especially in times of increasing workload within healthcare. Annemarie emphasized the crucial role of nurses in tertiary prevention, focusing on preventing complications in patients. In a hospital with a high patient turnover, such as Erasmus MC, the focus often lies on treatment. At the same time, complications such as pressure ulcers, falls or infections can be prevented when nurses consistently pay attention to them. This allows timely interventions and shows how personal attention can truly make a difference.

The lecture brought together a diverse group of colleagues—from real estate to research & education, and quality & patient care, an inspiring example of connection and broadening in action, all in a friendly and informal setting. Interesting conversations quickly emerged about digitalization and the professionalization of nursing. How are data and dashboards being used? Can education anticipate this new way of working? And how do we ensure that technology aligns with the needs of nurses?
